Just because a kitchen design trend makes a big splash for awhile doesn’t mean it’s timeless. There are some trends that run their course and phase out, usually because of how they affect the look or functionality of our kitchens. As we enter 2018, we’re saying goodbye to these three outdated kitchen trends:
Cabinets that don't extend to the ceiling, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances are all going out of style.
Goodbye short cabinets
People today want tall cabinets that extend to the ceiling, with no open space above. Cabinets that are flush to the ceiling give the illusion of making the kitchen look bigger by making the ceiling appear higher. They also eliminate that awkward space between cabinets and the ceiling that many people don’t know what to do with. Plus, extending cabinets to the ceiling provides extra storage space. The upper shelves can be used to store dishes, glassware, or other items that aren’t used as frequently.
Goodbye speckled granite
Speckled granite countertops sure had a good run in popularly as they were all the rage for years. While attractive, granite countertops can stain and be hard to maintain which isn’t what homeowners today want to deal with.
Quartz is taking granite’s place as the most popular countertop material. With varying colors and patterns, quartz is visually very appealing for most any style kitchen. Plus, it’s maintenance-free feature also makes it a top choice for durability since quartz is nonporous and resistant to heat, spills, and scratches.
Goodbye industrial looking appliances
Stainless steel appliances can look cold and industrial, which does nothing for a kitchen’s aesthetics. Homeowners who are updating their kitchens now are choosing to incorporate appliance panels so that their appliances are more seamlessly integrated or hidden into the design scheme. Or, they are choosing appliance panels to create a stand-out statement piece. Either way, appliances panels bring many creative design possibilities to the table.
The other popular alternative to silver stainless steel appliances are black stainless appliances. More modern and sleek, black appliances work with just about every style and color scheme of kitchen.
