How to Create Pleasant Twilight Inside Your Home - Part 2

Line Window Frames and Door Frames

Want to know where you're going without turning on the lights? This is something many of us desire, especially in the middle of the night when you're deep in a night-owl work session or have woken up for a midnight trip to the kitchen or bathroom. Instead of having to turn on the lights or even depending on outlet-mounted night lights, lining your windows and doors gives you beautiful gentle lighting and easy guides to get around the house.

For some, the idea of lining windows and doors with strip lights is especially delightful. You may love the way your home looks when outlined with lines of light and even color. Take the natural pleasing architecture of your home and enhance it with accent lights that are both useful and flattering. Not to mention, a great addition to your preferred dusk-like ambiance when the primary lights are off.

Light the Inside of Closets and Cabinets

Cabinets are one of the most shadowed places in any home. One of the reasons cabinets are often painted in light colors is to reflect as much light from the kitchen or bathroom lighting as possible. But whether your cabinets are stylishly dark-colored or just in a particularly shadowy corner, unlit cabinets have a way of becoming an organizational problem.

Strip lights, string lights, and even tiny emplaced canister lights can become the answer to an ongoing problem of unlit cabinets. If you're tired of not being able to see your home storage and want a solution that's easier on the eyes than a 60W white bulb, consider accent lighting inside your dark closets and cabinets instead.

Back-Lighting and Under-Lighting the Furniture

Another great way to give your home a lovely twilight illumination is by back-lighting the furniture. A recent popular choice is to install strip lights behind your television edge, giving the TV a classy back-lighting without creating glare on the screen.

For a bedroom nightlight, consider installing lighting underneath the bed frame, along the outer edge. This creates very cool ground effects for kids' beds or can set a romantic stage for sharing the bed with your loving partner. Take note of your largest pieces of furniture and consider how they might look with back-lighting, under-lighting, or internal cabinet and shelf lighting.

Dimmer Switches vs Smart Bulbs

For our final suggestion, we'll ask that you consider the choice between dimmer switches and smart lights. Smart lights are their own dimming (and color-changing) controllers through your mobile app or smart home program.

However, many smart lights advise you specifically not to install them in a dimmer-switch fixture because the varied electric supply can interfere with the smart-light functionalities. However, if you want your home to be more versatile and accessible to those who don't share your smart home account (or future buyers) then dimmer switches are the approachable choice that everyone can use and enjoy.
