How Long Does the Average Kitchen Renovation Take?

Planning a kitchen renovation is a big task for any homeowner. Most kitchen remodels start with a vision and a budget

You know what you want to change about your current kitchen and may have a dream kitchen you'd like to create. But after that are all the practical decisions and construction steps to make that into reality.

Before you get started on a kitchen renovation, there are exactly who numbers you need to know absolutely. The first is the quoted cost of your kitchen project.

Your contractor can give you a safe range in which the final cost will fall.  But cost isn't the only factor. You also need to know how long the kitchen renovation will ake so that it doesn't continue indefinitely.

You may be debating how much to renovate based on the monetary and time costs, or need to know how long you'll be making alternate arrangements for family meals. We've put together a helpful summary of kitchen renovation scheduling times so that you know about how long to expect your desired projects to take.

Minor Kitchen Renovations - 6 to 10 Weeks

Let's say you want to change a few things about your kitchen without making any serious structural changes. Maybe you want a new countertop, sink, dishwasher, and repainted cabinets but have no need to rip out the existing kitchen design.

Perhaps you're planning for a new backsplash and matching tile floor but the cabinets and countertops are already beautiful.

For these minor renovations, you can expect somewhere between one and three months, or six to ten weeks, from start to finish.

Non-Structural Kitchen Remodels - 1 to 4 months

More considerable kitchen remodels may take several months to complete, but can still be done in less than 6 months if you don't want to change the kitchen room itself.

For example. you can replace your cabinetry, install new appliances, and re-tile in just a few months and much of that time will be waiting for building materials to arrive. Once a renovation team gets going, most tasks take only a few days each to complete.

Average Kitchen Renovations - 2 to 6 months

Most kitchen renovations get serious about changes, which can extend the amount of time you need to schedule for construction. If you want to add or change the location of your cabinets, for example, this can add some time to your estimate.

Average kitchen renovations also frequently include moving the installed utility leads for kitchen appliances - like water lines for the dishwasher and fridge, and gas lines for the stove and oven. This allows you to change where your appliances are installed in the kitchen but it also requires cutting into and then rebuilding your kitchen walls.

Expect an average kitchen renovation to take between two and six months.

Major Kitchen Remodels - 6 to 15 Months

Kitchen renovations rarely take more than a year to complete, but you may approach this duration if you want to make extensive changes to the kitchen structure itself. Maybe you want to get rid of a wall or build a pass-through window.

Maybe you need new utilities added for new built-in kitchen appliances. You may want to rearrange the counters, add an island, or build in new shelves and cabinets.

Ripping out your old kitchen will take time. Making structural changes to the walls and utility lines will take time, and building your new kitchen will take time. Interestingly, building the new kitchen is usually the least time-consuming step of the process.

Expect major kitchen renovations with structural changes to take between six and fifteen months.
