However, an overlooked fact is that interior design incorporates a significant degree of science besides creativity and flair.  As such professional kitchen design will follow standard rules and procedures derived from specific interior design principles and elements. These elements range from space, light, pattern, color and an act of skillful balance between them is the key to an aesthetically pleasing space. A kitchen designer will assess your space with regard to the design elements to disguise flaws and enhance the features of your kitchen and, by extension, the overall space. We have run down a list of elements that carry the day in designing or [remodeling ](https://www.edesiakbs.com/blog/7-ways-to-find-kitchen-remodeling-ideas)your kitchen space.   **They include:**   #### **1. Space** Understanding your kitchen space ensures that you maximally utilize what is available to you. There are two categories of space, positive space (containing objects) and negative space (without objects)-- and balance between both is essential to avoid overcrowding or sparseness.  This balance is determined by the range of functions for your kitchen and your desired end appearance.  Regardless of the kitchen design, you decide, how you manage the space available to you makes all the difference. Whereas your physical kitchen space may be limited, kitchen designers have the luxury to extend it [beyond the physical boundaries](https://www.edesiakbs.com/blog/which-are-the-best-interior-designs-for-a-small-kitchen-space).   #### **2. Line** There are vertical (created by windows and doors), horizontal (created by surfaces, e.g., tabletops, countertops, and other surfaces) and dynamic lines, zigzag or curved (e.g., staircases). Good use of these lines is essential in shaping your space and guiding the eye, bringing you harmony and contrast. Interior designers utilize the dominant feature line with regard to your needs and interests to craft the best outlook for your kitchen and one that marries well with other spaces. In kitchen design, highlighting your horizontal lines makes your kitchen space appear wider or longer and draws the eye to a focal point.   #### **3. Light** Light is an integral aspect of your kitchen space. No one will work or dine in a dark and gloomy kitchen, let alone notice the elegant manicures. Proper lighting enhances your kitchen's mood, atmosphere, and ambiance, making it a lively place to cook or enjoy a meal with your loved ones. Light is the element that defines and adds life to all the other elements. A kitchen designer will leverage natural lighting and use other [lighting fixtures](https://www.edesiakbs.com/blog/what-is-pendant-lighting) as visual features in themselves to bring out the right touch and feel in your space.   #### 4. **Color** You cannot underestimate the [psychology of color](https://www.verywellmind.com/color-psychology-2795824), especially if an interior designer optimizes its usefulness. Colors can evoke memories and stir your emotions; thus, they can stimulate a physical or psychological response. For instance, green and blue colors are the best fit for a bedroom since they stimulate calm, while red is suitable for your kitchen, it is known to stimulate appetites. Besides, you can incorporate brighter or lighter colors in a small space to create an illusion of more space. A kitchen design will work with you to tweak and manipulate colors and bring your desired kitchen outlook.   #### **5. Pattern** A pattern is developed using repetitive design and can e implemented as soft furnishings, wallpaper, rugs, and fabrics. When applying a pattern, it is wise to consider first the size and style of your kitchen. In a smaller kitchen space, a kitchen designer will tactfully implement patterns to avoid overwhelming the space. They can also use patterns can also along with lines to bring a heightened or wide sense of space depending on your preferences.   #### 6. Form This refers to the shape of your kitchen as well as the shapes of equipment or objects therein. They are either geometric (square edges and hardlines) or natural (seeming to be created by nature), open (objects that can be looked into, e.g., kitchen shelves/cabinets) or closed. Forms of similar shapes in your kitchen contribute significantly to balance and harmony in your kitchen design. On the contrary, too many different shapes will have a confusing effect.   #### Who We Are [Edesia Kitchen & Bath, Inc](https://www.edesiakbs.com/) is the best kitchen and bathroom designers in Boston, MA.
